Breathless & Becoming

"I Bless This Mess" is a song I wrote while journaling in a cafe on a Sunday morning fighting what we call the Sunday Scaries. It sort of just emerged and I found myself humming the title to myself. I thought to try and put it to music with the help of generative tools. And this is what emerged.

This song is a playful emo rendition to rebelling against the system and rejecting the glimmer of money, mania and mastery.

Please don't follow...we're trapped in the hollow.

Life begins at forty...when you sing back to the eight-year old who knew what she knew then.

A song that was inspired by a book written by Doug White titled "Hiding in Plain Sight." This is an important story to know, to learn from and to listen to. The ability for the author to tell this story stayed with me and it kept calling me to put something to paper with my own pen and my own melodic method of healing. This is what spilled out. For those who serve, who wear the vest and badge and want so desperately to step into the light.

No phone, no watch back then. “Slippin’ Away” is a song about those endless summers of youth when music kept time and nowhere in particular was exactly where you wanted to be. It remembers aimless subway rides, headphones on, first kisses, warm nights, and the songs that somehow became inseparable from the people and places we loved. There’s an innocence in not knowing which night, kiss, or song will be the last one. God bless the music and the memories.

This song explores the invisible weight we inherit from family, culture, and the stories we are taught before we are old enough to question them. It follows someone who became skilled at carrying that weight quietly, mistaking endurance and silence for belonging. Through forgiveness, he begins to understand that what was handed down does not have to keep growing through him. The song reframes freedom as the gradual release of shame and the recognition that there was never something inherently wrong with the boy who learned to disappear. It ends in an unfinished but hopeful place, where healing sounds less like certainty and more like finally hearing the silence break.

“Heart in the Keys” paints a sun-washed portrait of a summer romance that refuses to end just because the sailors sail away. Set against the salty air, naval docks, quays and an August heat in the Florida Keys. We meet a restless sailor, only to live in on postcards, memories, and the melodies that bring him back whenever a bar singer plays. The title carries a playful double meaning: her heart remains geographically in the Keys, but it also lives in the musical keys she plays, where memory can briefly turn absence into presence. The painting is a faded summer postcard brought to life. At its heart, it’s a nostalgic song about discovering that some loves don’t stay, but they leave behind a rhythm you can keep in the beat.

“Camino” is a story of love, memory, and the roads that keep carrying us back toward what we thought we had lost. Ten years after letting someone go, the narrator returns to a sleepless city alive with marigolds, candles, church bells, music, and dancing, only to glimpse a former love moving through the crowd like a memory made flesh. As the night of the dead unfolds, past and present begin to blur until the journey itself becomes the revelation: perhaps some loves never truly leave us, but wait quietly inside a lifetime to be encountered again. Spanish guitar, mournful cello, distant palmas, and the recurring word “Camino” give the story the feeling of a pilgrimage, where every road seems to lead toward the same person, even when that person may exist only in memory.

“Wild Things Grow” explores the mysterious place where music, the body, memory, grief, and something resembling the spiritual begin to share the same frequency. The narrator discovers that sound can be felt before it is ever understood: a drum becomes a heartbeat, a cello pulls at something buried in the chest, and vibration awakens truths the thinking mind may have forgotten. The song gradually becomes a journey away from explanation and toward embodied knowing, asking whether healing, intuition, and even the sacred might sometimes enter through resonance rather than words.
